By purging your system of condensation, particuolarly around the top nut, you can reduce the risk of scoring of the top pump seal. As that piston travels up and down through the top pump seal, the ice formation may score the top seal which will then allow gas to escape through the scored area. If you purge your system, you can reduce this likelihood.
