In Ohio, fire authorities and the Ohio Department of Commerce are highlighting a low-cost solution that could help save lives and reduce property damage caused by fires. Thermal fuses, such as the OxySafe2, are being championed as a crucial safety device for individuals using oxygen therapy.
Smoking-related fires remain the leading cause of fire fatalities in Ohio, according to the State Fire Marshal. These incidents are particularly dangerous for those on oxygen therapy, where even a small spark can escalate rapidly. As part of the state’s fire safety initiative, the use of thermal fuses is being promoted to mitigate this risk.
Smoking while using oxygen is never safe and can lead to catastrophic consequences. Protect yourself and those around you—never smoke near oxygen equipment.
Thermal fuses, like the OxySafe2, are inline safety devices that attach to the oxygen tubing of a patient’s system. While they do not stop a fire from igniting, they prevent oxygen flow from feeding the flames, effectively stopping a tubing fire from spreading to the oxygen tank or concentrator - a common cause of severe fires and explosions.
State Fire Marshal Fire Prevention Bureau Chief Anita Metheny emphasizes the importance of these devices, stating, "They [thermal fuses] very well could mean the difference between life and death."
"Just like a sprinkler system is able to automatically detect and extinguish a fire, these thermal fuses serve as a last line of defense for individuals who use oxygen," said Metheny. This action prevents the fire from intensifying and spreading further, offering individuals and emergency responders critical time to react.
Oxygen therapy users face increased fire risks, especially when smoking is involved. Thermal fuses not only help protect the patient but can also safeguard surrounding property and individuals. Ohio's fire authorities are advocating for widespread adoption of these devices to significantly reduce fire-related fatalities in the state. By incorporating these devices, Ohio is taking a proactive approach to fire prevention and public safety.
