Posting no smoking signs

August 27, 2014 by Kristen Cifranic

No one should ever smoke around oxygen. Luckily for us, mostpeople in our industry know that oxygen and fire dont mix, or mix too well as the case may be. But how do you inform the average lay person not to smoke? Besides education (which should be given when employees start and when patients are set up) no smoking signs are a no-brainer. Typically, whenever you see a no smoking sign, there should be nosmoking within 25 feet of the sign. A DME should post signs on all of the entrances to oxygen storage areas, and also above the oxygen where it is stored. The US DOT does not require no smoking signs to be posted in vehicles, but does require that there be no smoking within 25 feet of the vehicle. Because of this, and accreditation requirements, its recommended to post no smoking signs in and on the vehicle. (For example on the drivers side door and onthe dashboard.) For extra credit, remove the lighter and ashtray from the vehicle, if it has one. At a patients home, many accreditationcompanies

Servomex 5200 vs. Handheld Analyzers

August 13, 2014 by Kristen Cifranic

A Servomex is a paramagnetic oxygen analyzer. It is used to tell you what your gas identity is and the strength / purity of that gas. A Servomexs accuracy is (+ or -) 0.1% oxygen and has been validated by ORSAT apparatus to USFDA Pharmacopoeia 23. Oxygen is magnetic! Oxygen is attracted to a strong magnetic field most other gases are not. This para-magnetism is used to obtain fast, accurate measurements. If your oxygen analyzer reading is 99.5%, then your oxygen is between 99.4% and 99.6% pure. Why cant I use my handheld analyzer when testing the identity and purity of my gas? A handheld analyzer uses fuel cell sensors which are much less accurate (+ or -) 3.0%. This means that your 99.5% oxygen could be anywhere from 96.5% and 100% pure (possibly not Oxygen USP)! Therefore, the FDA has specified using a paramagnetic analyzer, such as Servomex. NEW! My Employees Need Training

August 06, 2014 by Kristen Cifranic

I know my employees need training, but who can train them? Can I? Or do I need to get a consultant? There are two types of training that are generally accepted: 1. In-house training on cGMP and on the job training given by qualified personnel If you choose to do training in-house, you should be sure to cover current good manufacturing processes, and document the type, time and attendance at each session. An easy way to do this training in house is to use a training aid, such as the those available from Applied and other sources, that lays out the course and walks you through the steps to make sure your training is properly documented. Qualified personnel means that the person who trains them needs to have the adequate qualifications to train. This can be a mix between on the job experience and formal training, but it all should be documented and the trainers qualifications should be kept with the records that the personnel have been trained. 2. Training by an outside consultant If
