NEW Easy-to-Install OxySafe

June 13, 2016 by Laura Frederick

PRESS RELEASE: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 13, 2016 NEW EASY-TO-INSTALL OXYSAFE TWO DIRECTIONAL THERMAL FUSE AVAILABLE NOW TO HELP PREVENT OXYGEN FIRES CAUSED BY SMOKING OxySafe now offers a new installation step-saving bi-directional thermal fuse to help prevent oxygen fires caused by patients smoking while receiving oxygen therapy. It provides two directional protection against oxygen fires caused by patients smoking, using candles, stove-top ranges or other open flames while receiving oxygen therapy. Such fires are particularly prevalent in situations where oxygen therapy is provided in the home environment where there is limited patient supervision, though it may occur in environments like healthcare facilities and nursing homes too. OxySafe director of sales Jon Schultz noted that some studies have estimated 39% of COPD patients continue to smoke while on oxygen. He said that OxySafes new bi-directional thermal fuse saves time and effort in set-up. It really is a convenience for

What about Bob? Oxygen 101 The Road To Safety

March 08, 2016 by Kristen Cifranic

Oxygen safety should never be taken for granted. If you are in the business of delivering oxygen to patients, it is a good idea to frequently review what you are actually doing on a day to day basis compared to what is written in your procedures manual. Simple omissions and mistakes made in the rush of business can have catastrophic consequences. During my career I lost two patients (separate incidents) because they both were smoking cigarettes while on oxygen. The first patient actually was in his living room with his wife and visitors. He was a retired plumber and was very familiar with oxygen and its properties. He chose to smoke with his nasal cannula in place, something that he had done many times previously. But luck only lasts so long. The witnesses stated all they could remember was seeing flames coming from his mouth and nose. (Those of you who have had the required oxygen training may say, But Bob, oxygen isnt flammable!, which is true. However, in an oxygen enriched environment,

How can you stop patient cannula fires?

June 03, 2015 by Kristen Cifranic

According to the Joint Commission NPSG.15.02.01, EPs 2 and 3 require home care organizations to provide education to the patient and family regarding causes of fire and fire prevention activities. In addition to proper education Applied recommends providing patients with a thermal shut off device, such as Applieds OxySafe, as part of regular patient set-ups in order to protect against further damage from a tubing fire. OxySafe is a thermal fuse designed to stop the flow of gas in the event that the downstream cannula or supply tubing is ignited. With OxySafe, the PVC tube is inclined to extinguish because PVC will not normally burn in air offering healthcare providers a cost effective solution to lower the risk of serious patient injury in a dangerous oxygen fire. Stopping Patient Cannula Fires

December 23, 2014 by Kristen Cifranic

According to the Joint Commission NPSG.15.02.01, EPs 2 and 3 require home care organizations to provide education to the patient and family regarding causes of fire and fire prevention activities. So the question is, what education are accreditation agencies looking for besides telling the patients not to smoke or be near an open fire when using their oxygen? Accreditation agencies expect that patient education include the common causes of household fires, how oxygen enhances fires and a comprehensive list of what preventative actions need to be taken by the patient using oxygen. This education can be provided orally, or in writing (such as in a pamphlet), or preferably both. In addition to proper education Applied recommends providing patients with a thermal shut off device, such as Applieds OxySafe, as part of regular patient set-ups in order to protect against further damage from a tubing fire. What is ISO 8359?

February 19, 2014 by Kristen Cifranic

ISO 8359 is a standard that describes safety requirements for oxygen concentrators. It has recently had someamendments passed that effect how the oxygen concentrators are used in the home care industry. ISO, or the International Organization for Standardization is a worldwide federation of national standard bodies that works together to create industry standards. Depending on the country, accreditation body or other organization that you belong to, you might have to comply with ISO standards. In the US, they are not federal law- but are often followed by accreditation bodies or other inspectors. ISO 8359 was amended recently to include the benefits of new oxygen technology, and because the ISO had new information regarding the role of oxygen concentrators in accelerating fires in the home that have been caused by patient smoking while undergoing oxygen therapy. The ISO recognizes Although these changes cannot prevent such fires, it is hoped that the severity of such fires can be reduced

OxySafe

What is OxySafe? OxySafe is a thermal fuse designed to stop the flow of gas in the event that the downstream cannula or supply tube is ignited, and will meet VA, ISO and other regulatory requirements. With OxySafe, the PVC tube is inclined to extinguish because PVC will not normally burn in airoffering healthcare providers a cost effective solution to lower the risk of serious patient injury in a dangerous oxygen fire. You can download our OxySafe brochure here. Where Do I Use OxySafe? OxySafe should be placed as close to the patient as possible AND as close to the source as possible. This means that, ideally, you would outfit a patient with 2 OxySafes. This way you can protect the patient and others by protecting the oxygen source from fire. If you only put OxySafe in the middle of the circuit (say in between two 7 foot supply tubes) you may not protect the source, and you run the risk of the fire spreading regardless of the OxySafe extinguishing the cannula tubing- as the
